Hungry in Seattle

A few weeks ago, a couple of high school girlfriends and I finally visited the US capital of coffee, rain, and the Seahawks – Seattle!

I can lie and say that we did many exciting things, but honestly, all we did was eat and walk (typical Cindy, I know…). So here are our top food recommendations — Continue reading

Chocolate Chip Cookie

Oh yes, I did just write a haiku dedicated to chocolate chip cookies…

…my writing just reached a new low, didn’t it?

Mooncake Cravings: Mom’s Pregnancy Diet Linked to Kids’ Favorite Foods?

Thank goodness mooncake season is almost here. Yum yum!

When my mom was pregnant with me, she had a terrible mooncake craving. She bussed hours to Chinatown to get some mooncake. She devoured the whole box and ended up vomiting it out later. A few months later, she gave birth to me, the only child in our family who loves mooncake. My siblings hate it.

Apparently, what a mom eats during pregnancy and breastfeeding influences her child’s diet preferences. The flavors of the mother’s food are transferred through the amniotic fluid and breastmilk and the child develops a preference for it. Cool, huh?

My mother also told us that when she was pregnant with my sister, she ate lots of spicy foods. My sister loves spicy and gobbles Blazin’ Wings at Buffulo Wild Wings and XXX shrimp at Boiling Crab like it’s candy. Haha! My mom ate tons of watermelon with my brother and he eats whole watermelons in our home before I can even grab a slice.

Read more about this here.

Do you agree with this? Does your mom’s diet during her pregnancy influence your favorite foods? Tell me what you think in the comments below.

Being Single in a Love-Obsessed Country

Yup, I'm dating Korean triplets. Whoot whoot!

Yup, I'm dating Korean triplets. Whoot whoot!

The number one question people ask me in Korea is, “Do you have a boyfriend?” Follow up questions include, “Why not?” and “What’s your ideal type?” Couples are a huge thing in Korea! (Korean dramas make so much sense to me now.) Shops have names like “A Twosome Place,” stationary stores lack non-love related greeting cards, and every single activity is the perfect thing to do with your lover.

Example: Haeundae’s Dalmaji Road is filled with lovely cherry blossoms with a breathtaking beach nearby. It’s considered to be the perfect place to take a stroll with who…your lover. Catch a cherry blossom petal? It means you’re gonna fall in love.

Tomorrow (April 14th), however, is the day when us singles come out and wallow together. It’s Black Day! On Black Day, singles who did not receive any candy on Valentine’s or White Day celebrate…by eating jajangmyeon (자장면). Jajangmyeon are an adaptation of the Chinese zhajiangmian (炸酱面). Jajangmyeon are black bean paste noodles. Thick noodles are made by hand with white wheat flour. The sauce is made black bean paste, chopped pork and vegetables. It’s eaten on Black Day because of it’s dark color and gloomy nature. And it’s delicious and comforting too!

Maybe it’s eaten due to the ugly mouth stains you get afterwards. Since you’re single, you don’t have to worry about looking good for someone else, right? Kidding, look good for yourself folks.

Today our school served jajangmyeon noodles. Constant reminder that I’m single? Yes, but I actually love being single. My friends and I are planning to celebrate our singlehood with some jajangmyeon tomorrow. Find a local Korean restaurant and celebrate Black Day too! You don’t have to be single. You just gotta love good food.

And if being single gets you down, here are some songs to ease the pain of solitude:

Good Charlotte — I Don’t Wanna Be in Love

Everybody put your hands up / Say I don’t wanna be in love / I don’t wanna be in love

Jill Scott — One is the Magic Number

So many times I define my pride / Through somebody else’s eyes / Then I looked inside and found my own stride / I found the lasting love for me

Beyonce — Single Ladies

The lyrics don’t particularly stand out to me, but nothing cheers me up better than just some silly dancing to celebrate me! Whoot whoot for the single ladies (and gentlemen of course)!

Natasha Bedingfield — Single

I don’t need to be anybody’s baby / Is that so hard to understand? / No I don’t need another half to make me whole

Whether single or not, just be happy.
